Halloween doesn't have to be canceled

Updated: Nov 27, 2020

Whether you will be trick or treating or staying in, here are some ways to make the season feel extra special, something I think we all need this year.

1. Halloween Crafts. This paper plate one by @mamajots is so darling.

2. Indoor Candy Hunt. Thanks, @mintandmerit for telling us about this idea. Hide your child's favorite candy inside and turn off the lights. Give them a flashlight and let the fun begin! Or if it's nice enough outside, consider an Easter style candy hunt. Reuses those plastic easter eggs and grab your Halloween bucket. Hide them in the yard. This could be done with just your family or a few friends.

3. Watch a Halloween movie. My daughter has never seen a Halloween movie before, so I am excited to watch this one with her this year.

4. Decorate indoors! Since inside your 4 walls is probably where you are spending the majority of your time right now, why not get festive? Cozy pillows, mini pumpkins, or switch out some mantle decor. I love how @ashchamber decorated her kids' bookshelves!

5. Playhouse Makeover. Since we are spending so much time in our backyard this year, I decided I would give my daughter's playhouse a mini makeover for Halloween. Just a couple of fun touches and it feels spooky. The best part is that it feels new to my daughter again and she's playing with it more. I can't wait to share some photos soon.

6. Make Boo Bags. Bring a smile to someone's face with this little surprise. See this post on how to do it.

Tip: get your kids involved in making them or delivering them.

7. Get baking! Starbucks doesn't have a monopoly on pumpkin spice! This chocolate chip pumpkin pancake recipe from College Housewife (my go-to for recipes!) is on my list.

8. Make a Halloween basket for your little ones. A tradition I'm going to try this year. Tip: don't wait until Halloween to give them. Help the Halloween season last a little longer, by giving it to them early. See the inspiration for mine here.

9. Even if you can't go to the pumpkin patch this year, doesn't mean you shouldn't decorate a pumpkin. Paint or carve a pumpkin. I'm a big fan of the paint route since I just don't love carving them. How darling are these from @hellowsweethome

10. Last but not least, dress up! When you think back to your childhood Halloween memories, I bet you can think of a costume or two that you wore. That's really where the magic is. Even if it is just to Facetime with Grandma, I bet your kids will love dressing up.

Tip: once Halloween is over, please consider donating your costumes. You might have to hold on to them for a while because of Coronavirus. But this is an organization that normally accepts them. Also, I was able to donate mine last year to my local children's hospital.
